How to Prepare a CNC Machining RFQ: Drawings, Specs, Quantity

Slow quotes and endless back-and-forth usually come from incomplete RFQs, not the shop. Here is a complete checklist — drawing formats, key specs, quantity, inspection needs — so you get an accurate quote in 1-2 business days.

How to Prepare a CNC Machining RFQ: Drawings, Specs, Quantity

Slow quotes and repeated questions usually are not the shop being inefficient — they are the result of an incomplete RFQ. Give everything up front and both speed and accuracy improve dramatically. Here is a practical checklist.

1. Drawings: 3D and 2D each have a role

3D models (STEP / IGES / STL) define geometry so the shop can plan tool paths and fixturing — STEP is the most universal. 2D drawings (PDF / DWG / DXF) carry tolerances, surface finish, datums, threads, heat- and surface-treatment notes. The 2D drawing is what quoting and inspection are based on. Ideal: provide both.

2. Key specs — do not make the shop guess

  • Material grade (e.g. SUS316L, A6061-T6, Ti-6Al-4V) — "stainless" alone is too vague.
  • Tolerances — tight-tolerance every dimension inflates cost; specify tight only where needed, general tolerance (ISO 2768-m) for the rest.
  • Surface / heat treatment — anodizing, nickel plating, passivation, hardness (HRC). Often outsourced, affects lead time.

3. Quantity and lead time

Prototype/single piece carries the highest unit price; small batch (10-100 pcs) is the sweet spot for mid-size Taiwan shops; volume (500+) amortizes setup for the lowest unit price. State your target lead time and whether it is a repeat order.

4. Inspection and certification

State up front whether you need FAI / full dimensional reports, mill certs (EN 10204 3.1 / 3.2), batch traceability, or industry formats (AS9102, PPAP).

5. No drawing yet?

You can still start with a physical sample, a hand sketch with key dimensions, or an existing part plus the changes you want. Reverse engineering is usually quoted separately.

In short: 3D + 2D drawings, material grade, key tolerances, surface/heat treatment, quantity & lead time, inspection needs. Provide these six and most shops can return an accurate quote in 1-2 business days. Weiyon Industry accepts STEP / IGES / DWG / PDF uploads (multiple files per inquiry) and replies with a DFM review and formal quote.
